The Tortoise and the Hare

Once upon a time a tortoise and a hare had an
argument about who was faster. They decided to settle
the argument with a race. They agreed on a route and
started off the race.

 กาลครั้งหนึ่ง เจ้าเต่ากับกระต่ายเถียงกันว่าใครเร็วกว่ากัน
ทั้งคู่จึงตกลงที่จะวิ่งแข่ง
ก็มีการกำหนดเส้นทางวิ่งแล้วก็เริ่มการแข่งขัน

The hare shot ahead and ran briskly for some time.
Then seeing that he was far ahead of the tortoise, he
thought he'd sit under a tree for some time and relax
before continuing the race.

เจ้ากระต่ายนำโด่งมาไกลก็เลยชะล่าใจ
คิดว่าพักผ่อนใต้ต้นไม้ซักกะแป๊บนึงก่อนแข่งต่อก็คงดี

He sat under the tree and soon fell asleep. The
tortoise plodding on overtook him and soon finished
the race, emerging as the undisputed champ.

ไปๆมาๆก็ง่วงสิ ตื่นมาอีกทีเจ้าเต่าก็คว้าแชมป์ไปแล้ว

The hare woke up and realized that he'd lost the
race. The moral of the story is that slow and steady
wins the race.

นิทานตอนนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า ช้าๆแต่มั่นคงสามารถเอาชนะได้(เหมือนกัน)

This is the version of the story that we've all grown up with.

นี่เป็นเวอร์ชั่นเดะๆที่เราคุ้นหูกัน

But then recently, someone told me a more interesting
version of this story.

ไม่นานมานี้มีคนเล่าเวอร์ชั่นใหม่ที่น่าสนใจให้ฟัง

It continues.

ต่อเลยนะ....

The hare was disappointed at losing the race and he
did some soul-searching. He realized that he'd lost
the race only because he had been overconfident,
careless and lax. If he had not taken things for
granted, there's no way the tortoise could have beaten
him. So he challenged the tortoise to another race.
The tortoise agreed.

เจ้ากระต่ายสันหลังยาวก็รมณ์บ่จอยตามระเบียบที่แพ้
มันจึงค้นหาจุดอ่อนของตนเองมันก็พบว่าความมั่นใจในตัวเองเกินไปบวกกับความ
ขี้เกียจของมันนั่นแหละที่ทำให้แพ ้
ถ้ามันไม่เผลอหลับซะอย่าง เต่าหน้าไหนจะเอาชนะมันได้
มันจึงขอแก้ตัวใหม่อีกครั้ง
 "เฮ้ย..เมื่อกี๊ฟลุ้คอ๊ะป่าว แน่จริง..ใหม่เด่ะ" เจ้าเต่าก็ตกลง
ย่อมได้ไอ้น้อง"....

This time, the hare went all out and ran without
stopping from start to finish. He won by several  miles.

แน่นอนว่าครั้งนี้ เจ้าเต่าโดนทิ้งไม่เห็นฝุ่น กระต่ายชนะขาดลอย

The moral of the story?

เราได้ข้อคิดอะไรล่ะ...

Fast and consistent will always beat the slow and
steady. If you have two people in your organization,
one slow, methodical and reliable, and the other fast
and still reliable at what he does, the fast and
reliable chap will consistently climb the
organizational ladder faster than the slow, methodical chap.
 
ต่อให้ช้าแต่ชัวร์ ยังไงก็แพ้เร็วและสม่ำเสมอ
ถ้าเราเปรียบเทียบคนสองคนในองค์กรของเรา คนนึงช้าจริง
ทำอะไรมีระบบระเบียบแบบแผน แต่ทำอะไรๆไม่เคยพลาด
ไว้ใจได้แน่นอนในผลงานของเขา
เทียบกับอีกคนนึงที่เร็วและก็พอไว้ใจได้ในสิ่งที่เขาทำ
คนที่เร็วกว่ามักจะประสบความสำเร็จมีความเจริญก้าวหน้าในองค์กรนั้นๆมากกว่า
(ซิกแซกไม่เป็น อะไรลัดได้ เร็วได้ก็ไม่กล้าเสี่ยงไม่กล้าทำผลงานก็เลยน้อยมั้ง)

It's good to be slow and steady; but it's better to
be fast and reliable.

ไอ้ช้าแต่ชัวร์น่ะมันก็ดีอยู่หรอก แต่ให้เร็วและพอใช้ได้นี่ดีกว่า....

But the story doesn't end here.

เรื่องยังไม่จบแค่นี้

The tortoise did some thinking this time, and
realized that there's no way he can beat the hare in a
race the way it was currently formatted. He thought
for a while, and then challenged the hare to another
race, but on a slightly different route. The hare
agreed. They started off. In keeping with his
self-made commitment to be consistently fast, the hare
took off and ran at top speed until he came to a broad
river. The finishing line was a couple of kilometers
on the other side of the river.
 
คราวนี้ถึงทีเจ้าเต่ามาหาจุดบกพร่องของตัวเองบ้าง และมันก็พบว่า
เป็นไปไม่ได้เลยที่มันจะชนะกระต่ายในเส้นทางการวิ่งแบบที่เป็นอยู่นี้
มันก็คิดอยู่ซักครู่หนึ่งก็ไปท้ากระต่ายแข่งใหม่
แต่ขอเปลี่ยนเส้นทางวิ่งซะหน่อย
เจ้ากระต่ายก็ว่าย่อมได้อยู่แล้วเพ่ พอการแข่งเริ่มปุ๊บ
เจ้ากระต่ายก็ใส่เกียร์ห้อออกไปเต็มสปีดเลย
จนกระทั่งไปถึงระหว่างทาง "เฮ้ย!!!..เวรกรรม ต้องข้ามแม่น้ำ ทำไงล่ะตู..."
เส้นชัยอยู่ไม่ห่างจากฝั่งตรงข้ามเท่าไหร่เลย

The hare sat there wondering what to do. In the
meantime the tortoise trundled along, got into the
river, swam to the opposite bank, continued walking
and finished the race.

เจ้ากระต่ายมัวแต่เง็งว่าจะทำไงดี
จนเจ้าเต่าคืบคลานมาทันแล้วก็จ๋อมลงน้ำว่ายข้ามฝั่งไปเข้าเส้นชัย

The moral of the story?

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า....

First identify your core competency and then change
the playing field to suit your core competency.

พิจารณาจุดแข็งของตนให้ดีแล้วพยายามเปลี่ยนสนามการแข่งขันให้ตนเองได้เปรียบมากที่สุด
 
The story still hasn't ended.

ย๊างงง ยังไม่พอ มีต่อ....

The hare and the tortoise, by this time, had become
pretty good friends and they did some thinking
together. Both realized that the last race could have
been run much better.
 
ด้วยน้ำใจนักกีฬา ครั้งนี้เจ้าเต่ากับกระต่ายเป็นเพื่อนที่ดีต่อกันแล้ว
ต่างคนต่างมาระดมสมองคิดด้วยกัน หากทั้งสองร่วมมือกัน
การแข่งแบบเมื่อครั้งล่าสุดจะช่วยให้ทำเวลาได้ดีขึ้น
 
So they decided to do the last race again, but to run
as a team this time.

ดังนั้น พวกมันจึงคิดจะแข่งอีกครั้ง แต่แข่งคราวนี้เป็นแบบทีมเวิร์ค

They started off, and this time the hare carried the
tortoise till the riverbank. There, the tortoise took
over and swam across with the hare on his back. On the
opposite bank, the hare again carried the tortoise and
they reached the finishing line together. They both
felt a greater Sense of satisfaction than they'd felt earlier.

เริ่มต้นเจ้ากระต่ายก็แบกเต่าวิ่งไปด้วยความเร็วสูง จนถึงริมแม่น้ำ
เจ้าเต่าก็ให้กระต่ายขี่หลังว่ายข้ามไป
พอข้ามฝั่งเจ้ากระต่ายก็แบกเจ้าเต่าวิ่งต่อจนเข้าเส้นชัยด้วยกัน
ผลการแข่งครั้งนี้สร้างความพึงพอใจให้กับทั้งสองฝ่าย(ตัว)
มากกว่าการแข่งครั้งก่อนๆหน้านี้

The moral of the story?

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า....

It's good to be individually brilliant and to have
strong core competencies; but unless you're able to
work in a team and harness each other's core
competencies, you'll always perform below par because
there will always be situations at which you'll do
poorly and someone else does well.
 
การมีจุดแข็งและความสามารถโดดเด่นเฉพาะตัวเป็นสิ่งที่ดี
แต่หากไม่รู้จักทำงานร่วมกับผู้อื่น
ยังไงก็ไปไม่รอด เพราะมันจะมีบางสถานการณ์ที่เราเจ๋งคนอื่นเจ๊ง
ในขณะที่บางสถานการณ์เราเจ๊งแต่คนอื่นเจ๋ง

Teamwork is mainly about situational leadership,
letting the person with the relevant core competency
for a situation take leadership.

ทีมเวิร์คสำคัญตรงที่การกำหนดผู้นำให้เหมาะกับสถานการณ์
ให้ผู้ที่มีความถนัดกับสถานการณ์นั้นๆเป็นผู้นำกลุ่มในแต่ละช่วง
สถานการณ์ที่เหมาะกับความสามารถของเขา

There are more lessons to be learnt from this story.
Note that neither the hare nor the tortoise gave up
after failures. The hare decided to work harder and
put in more effort after his failure. The tortoise
changed his strategy because he was already working as
hard as he could. In life, when faced with failure,
sometimes it is appropriate to work harder and put in
more effort. Sometimes it is appropriate to change
strategy and try something different. And sometimes it
is appropriate to do both.

นอกจากนี้เรายังได้บทเรียนอีกอย่างหนึ่งด้วยว่า ไม่ว่าเต่าหรือกระต่าย
ไม่มีใครที่คิดเลิกล้มหรือท้อแท้หลังจากความความล้มเหลวได้เกิดขึ้น
กระต่ายแก้ไขจุดบกพร่องของตนเองโดยการทำงานที่หนักขึ้น
และเพิ่มความมุมานะในงานของตนเองหลังจากพบความล้มเหลว
ส่วนเต่าได้ปรับเปลี่ยนกลยุทธ์ของตนใหม่
เพราะตัวมันเองได้ทำงานหนักที่สุดเท่าที่มันจะสามารถทำได้แล้ว ในชีวิต
เมื่อเราพบกับปัญหาหรือความล้มเหลว
บางครั้งเราก็ควรจะทำงานให้หนักขึ้นและมีความเอาใจใส่ในงานมากกว่าเดิม
บางครั้งก็ควรเปลี่ยนแผนการทำงานและทดลองในสิ่งใหม่ๆที่แตกต่างออกไป
และในบางครั้งก็จำเป็นต้องทำทั้งสองอย่างเลย

The hare and the tortoise also learnt another vital
lesson. When we stop competing against a rival and
instead start competing against the situation, we
perform far better.

นอกจากนั้น กระต่ายกับเต่าก็ได้บทเรียนที่สำคัญอีกอย่างคือ
เมื่อเราหยุดการแข่งขันกับตัวบุคคล
แล้วหันมาแข่งขันกับสถานการณ์แทน พวกมันจะทำงานได้ดีขึ้นมาก

When Roberto Goizueta took over as CEO of Coca-Cola
in the 1980s, he was faced with intense competition
from Pepsi that was eating into Coke's growth. His
executives were Pepsi-focused and intent on increasing
market share 0.1 per cent a time.
Goizueta decided to stop competing against Pepsi and
instead compete against the situation of 0.1 per cent
growth. He asked his executives what was the average
fluid intake of an American per day? The answer was 14
ounces. What was Coke's share of that? Two ounces.
Goizueta said Coke needed a larger share of that
market. The competition wasn't Pepsi. It was the
water, tea, coffee, milk and fruit juices that went
into the remaining 12 ounces. The public should reach
for a Coke whenever they felt like drinking something.

คือไม่ว่าคนอเมริกันจะอยากทานน้ำอะไรก็จะมีขายให้หมดว่างั้นเหอะ
เขาแข่งกับสถานการณ์การดื่มเครื่องดื่มทั้งหมดของคนอเมริกัน

To this end, Coke put up vending machines at every
street corner. Sales took a Quantum jump and Pepsi has
never quite caught up since.
 
ผลสุดท้าย โค้กก็เลยติดตั้งตู้ขายมันทุกหัวมุมถนน ปริมาณการขายก็เพิ่มขึ้น
และหลังจากนั้นเป๊ปซี่ก็ไม่ใช่คู่แข่งไปเลย

To sum up, the story of
the hare and tortoise teaches us many things. Chief
among them are that fast and consistent will always
beat slow and steady; work to your competencies;
pooling resources and working as a team will always
beat individual performers; never give up when faced
with failure; and finally, compete against the
situation -- not against a rival.
